Annie’s Cottage is situated on sacred land that has been a site of human activity for over 15,000 years. This land is the traditional territory of the Algonquin and Shabot Obaadijiwan First Nation. I acknowledge these Nations (and any other recorded or unrecorded Nations who cared for the land) as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to care for the land now as part of Turtle Island.

I encourage all Canadians to become more actively involved in understanding why Land Acknowledgements are important, but also Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada. The University of Alberta offers a free online course that “explores key issues facing Indigenous peoples today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations.”
